Preventive Dental Care
Routine dental care matters.
Oral health is a crucial piece of your pet's overall health and well-being. When left untreated, dental disease can lead to severe health and lifestyle consequences for your pet, including immense pain and internal organ disease.
Signs and Symptoms of Dental Disease Include:
- Discoloration of teeth
- Red, inflamed gums
- Dropping food
- Refusal to eat
- Excessive drooling
- Facial swelling
- Cracked or fractured teeth
- Bad Breath
Unfortunately, included in the list of signs and symptoms of dental disease is 'none at all'. It's not always apparent that your pet is suffering from dental disease, as it often occurs beneath the gum line and only becomes visible to the eye once the disease has reached an advanced stage.
Dental Procedures
Regular dental procedures are a crucial component of your pet's oral healthcare. Not only do dental procedures allow us the opportunity to remove damaging plaque and tartar, but they also allow us to catch dental concerns we would otherwise be unable to detect. At the start of every dental cleaning, we perform a comprehensive oral exam and take full mouth radiographs. Radiographs allow us to see beneath the gum line and identify dental concerns occurring in areas not visible to the naked eye. Intervening at this stage, before concerns have progressed to the point where it's visible in the mouth, is vital in minimizing the negative impacts of dental disease. If indicated on exam and radiographs, we are able to perform routine endodontics such as tooth extractions and oral biopsies.
